good afternoon, everybody. i'm jim handly. i'm pat lawson muse. one of the areas's most prestigious teams will take the field with five fewer player. after reportedly hiring prostitutes during a team trip, news4's tracee wilkins has reaction from the dee matha community . >> >> reporter: dematha classic high school is a private boys' school with a stellar athletic programs. first reported by "the washington post." >> the incident referred to in the newspaper occurred after 5:00 a.m. on saturday morning. the school first learned of it on tuesday afternoon and began an investigation. five students and their families were notified they would face disciplinary procedures. >> reporter: they're accused of hiring three prostitutes from a

call service. according total paper, a parent of one of the accused players says the boys snuck the prostitutes in for sex after the st bed check around 5:00 a.m. a source close to the school's investigation says the mother who reported the incident blames the school for her son's actions. parents we spoke with today disagree. >> i've known this school for more than a dozen years and they handle themselves as best they can. they turn out a lot of fine young people. >> every tree will have a few bad apples. it's tough to chaperone 24/7. i think it probably happens at every school unfortunately. >> reporter: there were 18 chaperones and 65 players on the trip. principal dr. daniel, a graduate of dematha says the expectations we are made clear. >> we conducted room checks and monitored hallways, lath check at, and the monitors were

monitored. the school stands behind our coach, his staff, the school staff who monitored the trip and our students. >> reporter: we should mention that was a huge win for the dematha team, the first road game in the first road game of the year. they won 52-14. they have another away game planned for tonight in annapolis. in hyattsville, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. late word that all five players involved have been expelled. news4's tony tull will have reaction, where the dematha football team is playing calvert halls college high school. a maryland state trooper nearly lost his life in washington county. that's triper david avila getting sideswiped. in the dash cam video, we see him walk over to the siderail

before he collapses and calls for help on his radio. avila is not back to work. he still has a long road of rehab ahead of him. >> sometimes i look at it, and it doesn't seem like the light is at the end of the tunnel, but i'm able to walk. i'm doing a lot of physical therapy to try to get back. >> reporter: avila has what doctors call post-concussive syndrome. he has trouble with his balance and also in rehab for shoulder and back injuries. doctors don't know when he'll be able to go back to work. the truck driver got a ticket for not following the state's move-over law. that law requires emergency workers extra space. you'll want to avoid the red line this weekend. a large portion will be closed through sunday. no trains will be running between dupont circle and noma/gallaudet station. crews are doing track maintenance and rail upgrades,

and also installing fiber-optic cables to boost cell phone coverage. >> weekend traffic is pretty bad. >> reporter: so going to stick close to home? >> yeah, kind of have to. >> it's a big inconvenience. we're putting a lot of money into the system. i mean, there's got to be other options. >> the red line will resume normal operations monday morning. metro will be providing buses to get passengers to the closed stations. call it the calm before the storm. here's what it looks like out there now. severe weather could be moving in for the weekend. >> let's get details from storm team 4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer. >> hey, guys, we could be talking about widespread severe weather outbreak across portion of the region. a current temperature right now of 88, a heat index of 92, with the sunshine out there, you walk outside and it's really quite

how the. we have seen just a few very isolated showers across our region. those showers around reston and herndon, but that shower has died out. waffle this. look, those are the storms back to the west. that frontal boundary will move our way, and by tomorrow we have a very good chance of seeing not only severe weather, but an outbreak across portions of the mid-atlantic. so if you have plans tomorrow around our region or up towards the north, this is the forecast you want to watch out for. how about through your morning, around waldorf. looking like a very nice night tonight, down to 83, 75 about 11, waking up to a temperature of about 67. it starts off very nice. when i think we could see those storms move in in our forecast.

for her m.s. we'll have the interview right here on "news4 at 5." new numbers out today on the economy and jobs. they are not what the president had hoped to see. in august employers created 96,000 job, which is fewer than expected. with the economy being the key issue in this campaign, nbc's danielle lee shows us how both sides are pitching this information to voters. >> reporter: these are the workers both presidential candidates are trying to reach, people like dominic pappa, who just got hired at a new restaurant. >> i think i was lucky to be at the right spot at the right time. >> reporter: and those still unemployed and disappointed by the lack of jobs created in august. just 96,000, down from 140,000 in july. >> i'm trying to remain optimistic. >> reporter: one day after accepting his party's nomination, president obama is campaigning in new hampshire. he acknowledged room for

cancer research. it airs tonight at 8:00. and compact fluorescent light bulbs can be used with dimmer switches? is it better for fill your tires with nitrogen or compressed airs? it's friday, so we've got questions for "ask liz." our first question comes from tony in alexandria. can those compact fluorescent light bulbs we used. >> we turned to energystar, a joint program with the environmental protection agency and the department of center, and is says some won't work in fixture, so it is important to check the light bulb's packaging to see if it's compatible. that's because incan decent independent bulbs dim differently. while an incandescent can dim smoothly all the way down to no light output cfls can only dim

to 10% to 40% of their original brightness, so not exactly as dim-able. next question comes from shawn in alexandria. shawn wants to know what's the difference between filling your tires with nitrogen and regular air? >> did you know you can fill them with night rose gen? >> i did not. >> yes. consumers do have two choices, and that it's to use compressed air or nitrogen. air is found at most service stations, and is either free or relatively inexpensive. however, the air does leak from your tires over time. nitrogen, on the other hand can be a bit pricier, and isn't always readily available. however, nitrogen permeates through the tires much slower, so filling your tires could retain your tire pressure for a longer period of time. okay. >> now you know. >> now we know. last question from ann.

i towards the washington air for severe storms, it means you have a pretty good chance of severe weather, moderate risk means a very good chance for severe weather. the heat is here, the warms is here, the moisture is here, and you have a small cold front coming through. this is tomorrow around 5:00. i think between, say, 3 out to the west and about seven off to the "e.t." be on the lookout for very strong storms. but the best news here is that front nice enough, behind it we see some beautiful weathers.

into a war zone, as prince harry arrives in hell month province, his deployment may be a surprise to us, but could explain why he let his hair down and took his clothes off in las vegas last month. >> i think he was in vegas, because he knew he was going to be deployed. he wall street letting off steam, probably a little too much. >> reporter: he'll deal with a different kind of steam. he will soon be flying apaches in the volatile afghan province, providing air cover for military missions. >> working together with his colleagues, he'll be in a difficult and demanding job, and i ask that he be left to get on with his duties and to focus delivers port. >> stationed at camp bastian, he won't be far from his -- his 2008 deployment was kept a

secret by the army for fear he would become a taliban target, business his mission was cut short. harry's been itching to get back ever since. those vegas pictures may have gotten him in trouble with the palace, but he has dozen of supporters waiting for him in mel mand. the last two weeks pictures have been surfacing of his comrades in arm stripping down and saluting their prince. the british military says prince harry will start flying missions within ten days. concerned parents can have an extra set of eyes when their teens climb behind the wheel. there's a new company that will actually follow teen drivers around to see if they're breaking any rules. it's called quest driving safety. the company looks for all sorts of risky behavior, from texting while driving, to cutting people

off, to speeding. >> so it's very easy within the first few minutes to see those types of violations. >> if that traffic collision does result in a serious injury, that means they'll be held accountable for that. >> quest driving safety is based in san diego, but also serves our area. it charges $99 to follow your teen for 15 to 20 minutes. the company will also observe older drivers and commercial workers. authorities now say a love triangle may have been behind yesterday's air terror hoax, and they made an arrest, in another bizarre twist today, jay gray reports on the surprise waiting for the hoax victim when he finally got to his destination. >> no comment. no comment. >> reporter: chris shell had little to say, but plenty of people are talking about his wild ride over the last 24 hours. it started yesterday.

>> several fbi and atf agents came in from the back of the plane, walked up to the middle of the plane, and pointed guns at a particular passenger and told him to put his hands in front of the seat. >> that passenger was shell, pulled from a plane after a phone call warned airport police he was trying to cry explosives. >> we checked him, and determined he was not in the possession of anything dangerous, hazardous, or illegal. >> officers called it a nasty trick, a hoax carried out on shell's 29th birthday. >> whoever it is, they should, you know, be held accountable. >> shell pointed the finger at kenneth smith, the new boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend. today federal agents arrested smith who apparently admitted making the call from a pay phone as a as a result of compromising

pictures shell posted of his ex-girlfriend on facebook, but it was shell who found himself in a compromising position when he landed where officers were again waiting on the tarmac. all the publicity had caught the attention of police in texas, where he faced arrest warrants after missing court appearances on multical drug -- this afternoon he posted bond in the is same clothes he was wearing. a bizarre trip that ultimately landed him a night behind bars. jay gray, nbc news, dallas. if convicted, smith faces a maximum of ten years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. he could also be forced to repay police for their emergency response. a canine cop in long island is being hailed a hero after finding a doctor who disappeared in a state park. his name is chase. he's a 4-year-old police dog that jumped into action monday

after a 76-year-old man disappeared during a fishing trip. chase joined the large search party, and after four days located a small bottle of fly-fishing oil. he then led police right to the doctor who was alert and, of course, relieved. as for the dog, chase got treated to a steak dinner. >> his indication when he finds something is either to sit or downed. he laid next to the drr until we got there. we'll have some filetmignon for him. >> other than a few bug bites, the doctor they say is fine. good for him. hey, coming up, much more ahead, drew peterson found guilty of murder. the defiant words as he was led out of the courtroom, and how a law named after him led to his conviction.

4:00 and 7:00 in the evening. ing it be kind of nasty. for us our biggest threat will be winds. most of the day should be fine. down towards nats park, one against take on the marlins tonight. looking good. the temperatures will come down to a very nice night for baseball. 72 degrees, temperature overnight tonight, 64 in fred ricks. the thunderstorms will start to move in. maybe around 3:00, and then push through the entire area the entire afternoon. heads up, these storms will mean business across our region. after the storms move through, though, say good-bye to the heat and hello to the gorgeous,

today we're hearing defiant words from drew peterson.

the family of his fourth wife stacy peterson wants him charged too, but's kevin tibbles reports, the savio case is far from over. >> reporter: it took the jury just 13 hours to find the flamboyant former police officers drew peterson guilty of the murder of his third wife kathleen savio. >> the defendant in this case was a coward and a bully. >> reporter: 8 1/2 years after her death, savio's family was jubilant. >> finally somebody heard her cry. 12 people did the right thing, thank god. >> reporter: savio was found dead in her bathtub in 2004. originally it was ruled an accidental drowning. then when peterson's fourth wife stacy went missing in october of 2007, suspicions were raised. savio's body was exhumed, her death ruled a homicide.

extensive searching for 23 years old stacy peterson turned up nothing. she remains missing to this day. drew peterson insisted stacy had run off with another man. he spoke with matt in november 2007. >> can you look me straight in the eye and tell me you had nothing to do with the death of your third wife kathy or the disappearance of your fourth wife stacy? >> i can look right in your eye and say i had nothing to do with either of those instances. >> reporter: but acquaintances with stacy came forward with stories they say told him, how peterson had threatened to kill her and how he asked her to provide him with an alibi the night savio died. >> i could not come up with any reason in my mind to not put him at the scene without a reasonable doubt. >> reporter: in 2008, the state of illinois passed a la allowing such hearsay evidence. it was dubbed "the drew law."
